The addition of one hydroxyl group to the 20 carbon position in cholesterol leads to an analog, 20a-hydroxycholesterol. This compound has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase and acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase.
