Cloridrato de desipramina é um antidepressivo tricíclico usado principalmente no tratamento do transtorno depressivo maior e certos transtornos de ansiedade. Funciona inibindo a recaptação de norepinefrina e, em menor grau, de serotonina, aumentando assim os níveis desses neurotransmissores na fenda sináptica. Esse mecanismo contribui para seus efeitos antidepressivos. A substância aparece como um pó cristalino branco a off-white e é solúvel em água, tornando-a adequada para administração oral em forma de comprimidos ou como solução injetável. Cloridrato de desipramina tem uma meia-vida relativamente longa, permitindo a dosagem uma vez ao dia em muitos casos. Os efeitos colaterais comuns podem incluir boca seca, constipação, retenção urinária e sedação, enquanto os riscos mais sérios envolvem problemas cardiovasculares e potencial de overdose.
