Ácido etacrínico é um composto orgânico sintético classificado como um diurético de alça, utilizado principalmente no tratamento do edema associado à insuficiência cardíaca congestiva, cirrose hepática e doenças renais. É caracterizado pela sua fórmula química C13H12ClO4S e um peso molecular de aproximadamente 299,75 g/mol. Ácido etacrínico é um pó cristalino branco a off-white que é solúvel em água e em solventes orgânicos como etanol e metanol. Seu mecanismo de ação envolve a inibição do co-transporte de sódio-potássio-cloreto nos túbulos renais, levando ao aumento da excreção de sódio, cloreto e água. Esse efeito diurético ajuda a reduzir a sobrecarga de fluidos em pacientes. Ácido etacrínico também pode ter efeitos colaterais potenciais, incluindo desequilíbrios eletrolíticos, desidratação e ototoxicidade, particularmente quando usado em altas doses ou em pacientes com condições preexistentes. Devido à sua estrutura única, é distinto de outros diuréticos de alça, como a furosemida, e é frequentemente utilizado em pacientes que são alérgicos a derivados de sulfonamida.

Ethacrynic acid is a non-competitive, reversible inhibitor of the Na+/K+-ATPase. It has been shown to be effective against cancer tissues and infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and leishmaniasis. Ethacrynic acid inhibits 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA)-induced tumor growth in mice by inducing apoptosis in human leukemia cells. Ethacrynic acid also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and cellular physiology by decreasing the activity of enzymes which are involved in energy metabolism.
