CAS:Oxone is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that has an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. It is used as a disinfectant or sterilant and is often used in wastewater treatment plants to remove organic contaminants such as naphthalene. The mechanism of action for Oxone involves its reaction with the electron-rich functional groups found on the bacterial cell membrane, which forms peroxides that cause irreversible damage to the cell. Oxone also reacts with DNA, RNA, and proteins, and is therefore toxic to all cells. Oxone has been shown to be effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but it does not work well against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
