DHPDC is a strong electron donor and has a redox potential of +0.28 V. The enzyme can catalyze the formation of disulfide bonds in proteins by oxidizing cysteine residues. DHPDC is also an important component of many biological processes such as the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. It does this by transferring electrons from one molecule to another. This process is known as reduction.
