Descrição:
Índio é um metal pós-transição com o símbolo químico "In" e o número CAS 7440-74-6. É caracterizado por sua aparência prateada e branca e é relativamente macio, maleável e dúctil, permitindo que seja facilmente moldado e formado. Índio tem um baixo ponto de fusão em comparação com muitos metais, o que o torna útil em várias aplicações, incluindo soldagem e eletrônica. Apresenta uma propriedade única de expandir-se ao solidificar, o que é raro entre os metais. Índio é encontrado principalmente em minérios de zinco e muitas vezes é extraído como um subproduto do refino de zinco. Quimicamente, sabe-se que possui um estado de oxidação +1 e +3, sendo o estado +3 mais estável em compostos. Índio é não tóxico e tem aplicações na produção de óxido de estanho Índio (ITO), que é amplamente utilizado em telas sensíveis ao toque e displays de painel plano. Além disso, desempenha um papel no desenvolvimento de certas ligas e está sendo pesquisado para possíveis usos em células solares e outras tecnologias avançadas.
