Thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-5,7-diol is a prodrug that is converted to the active form thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-5,7-diol hydrate in the intestine. It has been shown to be effective against bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-5,7-diol hydrate forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules in the gut and prevents their loss from the gut lumen. This results in an increased volume of liquid content in the bowel and a decrease in stool frequency. Thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-5,7-diol hydrate also increases blood flow to the bowel by stabilizing erythrocytes and preventing hypoxia.
