Mortalin has been shown to be a receptor for the alpha subunit of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) receptors. It also regulates ion channel activity, cellular proliferation, and cell motility. Mortalin has been used as a research tool in cell biology and pharmacology, as well as for the study of protein interactions. It is also used as an inhibitor in peptide ligand binding studies and to study receptor activation.
