(+/-)-4-Benzylazetidin-2-one is an enantiomer of the β-lactam antibiotic azetidinone. It has been synthesized by chemoenzymatic methods and is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers. (+/-)-4-Benzylazetidin-2-one is a lactam with a carboxylic acid substituent in the lactam ring. The chlorides are removed from the molecule by ammonolysis, which produces the amide. This amide reacts with an alkyl group, such as methyl chloride, to produce the lactam ring. The synthesis of (+/-)-4-Benzylazetidin-2-one can be catalyzed by either acidic or basic catalysts.
