AH 001 is an orally active small molecule that is designed to inhibit the activity of the enzyme IDH2. The compound is a competitive inhibitor with a low energy profile, which provides an advantage over other molecules in the same class. AH 001 has been shown to be effective in reducing blood glucose levels in mice and rats with diabetes, as well as inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. It also has no adverse effects on healthy cells. AH 001 binds to IDH2 with high affinity and inhibits its ability to catalyze the reduction of alpha-ketoglutarate into D-glutamate, which is required for the production of NADPH and ATP. This inhibition causes a buildup of alpha-ketoglutarate and a decrease in NADPH production, leading to cell death.
