It is used to catalyze the oxidation of alcohols, carboxylic acids, and other organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide. 7-Oxo cholesterol 3-acetate has been shown to be a low energy catalyst that can be used in mild conditions. This compound has been shown to produce diacetyl, which is an important reaction product in the synthesis of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). 7-Oxo cholesterol 3-acetate has also been isolated from adipose tissue and shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
