It has been shown to be the first synthetic nucleotide analogue to have significant activity against HIV in vitro. The synthesis of this compound starts with the diphosphate or monophosphate form of cytidine. The phosphate group is removed and replaced with a 2'R benzoyl group. This process is followed by fluorination and methylation steps.
