The experimental and theoretical study of 1-(2-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)propan-1-one (1) has been carried out. The reaction products have been characterized by two-dimensional NMR experiments, and the experimentally determined structures were confirmed by calculation. The spectroscopic data for 1 were also obtained. The study was motivated by the need to find a replacement for benzene in the production of polystyrene, a widely used plastic material. It is hoped that this compound will be able to replace benzene in the production of polystyrene without any toxic effects on humans or other living organisms.
