It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro by binding to κ-opioid receptors, which are proteins found on the outside of cells. 4'-Hydroxy-3'-methylacetophenone also inhibits mycobacteria through hydroxide solutions, chemical ionization, and vibrational spectroscopy.
