It is synthesized by the de novo purine nucleotide biosynthesis pathway and is activated by phosphorylation to a 5'-diphosphate. This compound has been shown to inhibit the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 in cell culture. In addition, it has been shown to have anticancer activity against human leukemia cells in vitro and in vivo.</p>
