1,3-Bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride is a chloride salt that belongs to the ionic liquid group of compounds. It has been shown to form multilayers in equilibrium with solvent and take up anions from the environment. This compound is also an ionic polymer that is used for the study of fields and polymerization reactions. The field-induced assembly of 1,3-bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride was studied by spectroscopy on acrylic acid (AA) as a model system. AA was found to assemble into linear chains with a density of about 0.1 per square micrometer when exposed to an electric field at 0.5 V/cm for 2 hours. The order parameter for this system was found to be σ=0.6±0.2
