Neurotoxin inhibitors are used to inhibit the activity of proteases that are involved in the production of neurotoxins. Lectin concanavalin is an inhibitor that binds to the active site of a protease, thereby inhibiting its activity. Neurotoxin inhibitors may be used in the treatment of infectious diseases such as tetanus and botulism. Neurotoxin inhibitors can also be used to diagnose the presence of these proteins by binding to them and preventing their access to the active site on proteases. The most common mammalian cells used in biochemical assays are neuronal cells which have been obtained from rat brain tissue or mouse spinal cord tissue.
