It has been shown to inhibit gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. The compound also inhibits the growth of other gram-positive pathogens, such as Propionibacterium acnes and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Ethyl 1-acetylcyclopropane-1-carboxylate binds to the enzyme DNA gyrase, which is required for bacterial replication and transcription.
