DMCPM has been shown to initiate free radical polymerization of various monomers and polymers, such as polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(vinyl acetate). This compound also has high activity in the production of polypropylene from ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. DMCPM can be synthesized from magnesium metal and a hydrocarbon group.

CAS:[(2-Bromophenyl)(dimethylamino)phosphanyl]dimethylamine is a β-unsaturated phosphane with a conformation that is stabilized by the presence of a double bond. The compound has been found to undergo two types of reactions, cyclization and acyclic rearrangement. The β-unsaturated phosphane undergoes cyclization at elevated temperatures, producing an unsaturated ketone. The acyclic rearrangement produces an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde through elimination of water and release of hydrogen gas. This reaction can be observed in the spectra as a protonated carbonyl band at 1725 cm−1. In addition to these two reactions, [(2-bromophenyl)(dimethylamino)phosphanyl]dimethylamine also forms an adduct with phenylacetaldehyde. This compound has been shown to be effective at inhibiting xanthine oxidase in humans and has been used as a lead compound for the development of new inhibitors of this enzyme.

The reaction products have been characterized by two-dimensional NMR experiments, and the experimentally determined structures were confirmed by calculation. The spectroscopic data for 1 were also obtained. The study was motivated by the need to find a replacement for benzene in the production of polystyrene, a widely used plastic material.
