1,2-dibromoethane is widely used as a bromine source in organic synthesis. It is utilized as a fumigant for treatment of logs for termites and beetles, for control of moths in beehives. It finds the application to make vinyl bromide, a precursor to some fire retardants. It is used as an intermediate in the preparation of dyes and pharmaceuticals.
