2-(N-Ethyl-m-toluidino)ethanol is a monomer that reacts with ethylene in the presence of toluidine and molybdate to form polyethylenes. It is an important component in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used for packaging, carpeting, plastic bottles and fibers. 2-(N-Ethyl-m-toluidino)ethanol also forms a reaction vessel with ethylene oxide, which improves the transfer of ethylene gas to the polymerization reaction. This monomer is also used as a modifier in the production of toughened plastics by adding it to carboxylic acids.
