Diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid pentasodium salt is a detergent additive that has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds. It is a water soluble polymer with a hydroxyl group on each amine. The polymer has been shown to be stable in the presence of magnesium salts, which are often used in detergent compositions. This polymer can be oxidized by zirconium oxide into its active form, which then binds to fatty acids present on the bacterial cell membrane. This binding leads to the disruption of the membrane and subsequent cell death.
