The addition of p-tolyl acetate to a solution containing methyl anthranilate and sodium citrate produces a diazonium salt, which reacts with benzoic acid to produce methylbenzoate. This reaction can be studied by adding deuterium isotope, which will cause the methylbenzoate product to have different properties from those produced in the absence of the deuterium isotope.
