Butacaine is a local anesthetic that has been used for decades. It acts as a competitive antagonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, which prevents nerve impulses from traveling down the axon of the neuron. Butacaine is water soluble and chemically stable in aqueous solutions. The antimicrobial activity of butacaine is related to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to inhibition of mitochondrial functions.
Butacaine hydrochloride may be dissolved in water or benzalkonium chloride to form an isotonic solution for injection into a vein or muscle, respectively. It can also be administered by inhalation as an aerosol spray for bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Butacaine is available in an oral formulation under the trade name Lidocaine, which contains excipients such as benzyl alcohol and propylene glycol.
