4,5-Dihydroxybenzene-1,3-disulfonic acid (DHBS) is a sulfonic acid that has been found to have antiinflammatory activity. It is structurally similar to the active ingredient in some over-the-counter drugs for bowel disease. DHBS has been shown to inhibit inflammatory responses by reducing prostaglandin E2 production in experimental models. DHBS also inhibits the release of human immunoglobulin from intestinal cells and reduces the severity of colitis in rodents. In vitro studies have shown that DHBS inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of ginsenoside rg3 and chymopapain, which are both involved in physiological processes within cells. The rate constant for this inhibition was measured at 2×10 M−1s−1. Laser ablation experiments have confirmed that DHBS binds to DNA and RNA by measuring the melting point of DNA and RNA molecules at 54°C and 54°C
