3,3,3-Trifluoropropane-1,2-diol is a model compound that is synthesized from the reaction of phosphorus pentachloride and ethanolamine in the presence of irradiation. The product is an alcohol with three hydroxyl groups, which can be used for different reactions. 3,3,3-Trifluoropropane-1,2-diol has an active hydrogen bond that can form a hydrogen bond with an amino acid or phosphate group in a protein. It also has a trifluoromethyl group that can react with other compounds and cause them to be more toxic than they would otherwise be. 3,3,3-Trifluoropropane-1,2-diol has been shown to react with glutamic acid in model studies to form a cyclic amine.
