Mellein is a natural compound that is found in the leaves of plants. It has been used historically as an insecticide and repellent. Mellein has been shown to have biological properties, such as antiviral, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities. The plant extract inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Mellein also has an effect on organic acids in plants by inhibiting their metabolism. Mellein can be extracted from acetate using a solvent extraction process known as solid phase microextraction (SPME).
