Fenazox is a potent inducer of nitrosation. It is produced in the reaction of azoxybenzene with a cationic surfactant and a hydroxide solution, which converts the azoxybenzene to an azobenzene. The deuterium isotope effect has been observed in this reaction, which indicates that the initial step involves nucleophilic addition of a water molecule to the nitro group on the aromatic ring. This leads to formation of a nitronium ion intermediate, which can react with another molecule of water to produce an N-O-N bond.
A kinetic study was performed on this reaction and it was found that it follows first order kinetics.
