3,6-Bis(2-methylpropyl)-1H-pyrazin-2-one is a microbial transformation product of stephacidin, an antifungal agent. Stephacidin is a cyclopiazonic acid analogue with potent antifungal activity. 3,6-Bis(2-methylpropyl)-1H-pyrazin-2-one is produced from the metabolism of stephacidin by microorganisms and has been shown to have similar properties as stephacidin in inhibiting fungal growth. 3,6-Bis(2-methylpropyl)-1H-pyrazin-2-one inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, which is a sterol that forms part of the fungal cell membrane. The binding of this compound to ergosterol disrupts the integrity of the membrane and leads to cell death.
