(9Z,12Z,15Z)-Octadeca-9,12,15-trien-1-ol is a synthetic substrate that has been used in the study of the biological effects of polycarboxylic acids and their derivatives. These compounds are poorly soluble in water but can be dissolved by using organic solvents such as methanol. The carboxyl group on the 9Z,12Z,15Z)-octadeca-9,12,15-trien-1-ol molecule reacts with methyl ethyl to form methyl octadecanoate. This compound is an antimicrobial agent and has been shown to have beneficial effects on congestive heart failure.
