Tripropyl phosphate is a chemical compound with the formula CH3CH2PO3H. It is a colorless viscous liquid that is soluble in water, ethanol, ether and acetone. Tripropyl phosphate is used as an antimicrobial agent in personal care products. It can be found in many hair-care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, and styling aids. It also has been used for decades in the textile industry to prevent mildew and mold growth on cotton fabrics during storage and importation. The hydroxyl group of tripropyl phosphate reacts with sodium carbonate to form sodium hydrogen phosphate, which has excellent chemical stability. This product also has cationic polymerization properties that are useful in the production of acrylic fibers. The antimicrobial activity of tripropyl phosphate comes from its ability to affect bacterial membranes by disrupting their structure and function.
