2-Nitronaphthalene is a naphthalene derivative that can react with water to form nitroso compounds. It has been shown to have an ultrafast reaction with cells, which may be due to its ability to cause vibrational excitation of a water molecule. 2-Nitronaphthalene is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders, as well as for the treatment of some types of cancer. 2-Nitronaphthalene has also been found to induce mutations in the DNA of Sprague-Dawley rats and plant cells. The carcinogenicity of this compound has not yet been determined.
