1,3-Dinitroglycerin is a crystalline compound that is a nitrate ester of glycerol. It is used as an organic nitrate in the production of explosives and as a vasodilator for the treatment of congestive heart failure. 1,3-Dinitroglycerin has been shown to inhibit the activity of several enzymes, including those that catalyze the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. The enzyme activities are determined by kinetic measurements using spectrophotometry, x-ray diffraction data, and blood sampling techniques. This drug also inhibits enzymes involved in the metabolism of drugs such as phenytoin and lidocaine. 1,3-Dinitroglycerin can be used to prepare samples for pharmacokinetic studies.
