Heptyl ether is a trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and detergent compositions. It is a cationic surfactant that is used as a component in cleaning compositions, such as dishwashing detergents, laundry detergents, hard surface cleaners, and personal care products. Heptyl ether can also be used to treat HIV infection by inhibiting the viral reverse transcriptase enzyme. The chemical stability of heptyl ether allows it to be used in reaction solutions that require heat or light for polymers to form. Heptyl ether reacts with polyvinyl alcohols and hydroxyl-containing polymers to form cationic polymers under the influence of an oxidation catalyst. These polymers are often used in the manufacture of materials such as plastics and fibers.
