This drug has been shown to cause neuronal death by inhibiting energy metabolism in the brain, as well as causing mitochondrial membrane potential changes in neurons. 6-OHDAH has also been used as an experimental model for Parkinson's disease and other metabolic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus.
