Propyl isobutyrate is a metabolic product of the fermentation process. It is the ester formed by the reaction of propionate and butyric acid. Propyl isobutyrate has been found to be a cross-linking agent for polyvinyl acetate, which can be used as a polymerization initiator for vinyl chloride monomer in the production of plastics. Propyl isobutyrate also has been shown to reduce depression in animal studies, although it does not have any effect on growth rate. The structural formula for propyl isobutyrate can be seen below:
