This chemical ionizes in water to form the hydronium ion, H3O+, and a dimethylaminobutanoate ion, CH3-N(CH3)2COO-. 4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid can be used as a cationic surfactant or immobilization agent. The structure of this compound contains a carbonyl group, which makes it susceptible to electron-capture detection by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
