4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid is an organic compound that belongs to the group of carboxylic acids. 4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid is a precursor in the biosynthesis of carnitine, which is important for energy production and transport in humans. It also has been shown to be an analytical reagent for hydrochloric acid. This chemical ionizes in water to form the hydronium ion, H3O+, and a dimethylaminobutanoate ion, CH3-N(CH3)2COO-. 4-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid can be used as a cationic surfactant or immobilization agent. The structure of this compound contains a carbonyl group, which makes it susceptible to electron-capture detection by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
