5-Ethyl-m-xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used as a solvent and a pesticide. It is biosynthesized in plants by the conversion of geranyl pyrophosphate to farnesyl pyrophosphate. This compound is also found in eucalyptus oil, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. 5-Ethyl-m-xylene has been used as a reagent for the desorption of pesticides from soil and plant material. 5-Ethyl-m-xylene can be extracted using microextraction with hot water or alcohols with headspace sampling. The compounds are then identified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
