Benzyl 3-phenyl-L-alaninate is a synthetic molecule that can be used as an inhibitor of the enzyme phospholipase A2. The molecule was synthesized by reacting benzyl alcohol and phenylalanine, followed by removal of the benzyl group. The synthesis was optimized to produce a single enantiomer of the final product. The inhibitory activity of this compound has been shown in red blood cells, which are affected by phospholipase A2. Benzyl 3-phenyl-L-alaninate is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and acetone and hydrolyzes easily in water to release benzylic alcohol and phenyllactic acid.
