Hastatoside is a phenolic compound, isolated from the roots of Verbascum thapsus. It has been shown to have a variety of biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antimicrobial effects. Hastatoside has been found to be hepatoprotective in animal studies. It also possesses UV absorption activity and has been shown to have anticancer effects. The structure of hastatoside was determined by IR, NMR and MS spectroscopy. The molecule contains an iridoid glucoside that is substituted with a chromatographically different phenolic acid group at C-3.
