11β-Hydroxy-3-oxo-androsta-1,4-diene-17β-carboxylic acid (11βOH) is an active metabolite of hydrocortisone. It is a synthetic glucocorticoid that has been shown to have the same effects as prednisolone in humans and animals. 11βOH inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-2, tumor necrosis factor, and interferon. 11βOH also has anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing neutrophil migration and adhesion to endothelial cells. This agent can be used in the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s disease.
