4-Epioxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has been shown to be effective against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. This drug has been used in wastewater treatment plants to control metal-resistant bacteria, such as Enterobacteriaceae. 4-Epioxytetracycline binds to the response element of bacterial DNA, which prevents transcription and replication. The matrix effect occurs when the concentration of this drug is too high for the rate of bacterial growth. Trifluoroacetic acid is used as an additive to increase its solubility. 4-Epioxytetracycline can be prepared in an anhydrous sodium or sodium carbonate solution with trifluoroacetic acid, and then purified by preparative thin layer chromatography using monoclonal antibodies that bind specifically to the drug.
