Epitetracycline hydrochloride is a tetracycline antibiotic that has been used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, as well as other bacterial infections. It is an analog of the natural product tetracycline and can be used to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria that are resistant to tetracyclines. This drug inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of amino acids to their corresponding transfer RNA molecules. Epitetracycline hydrochloride is water-soluble and suitable for oral administration. It is not active against viruses or fungi and should not be given intravenously because it accumulates in the kidneys.
