Pranlukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used to treat asthma and other inflammatory diseases. It binds to the cysteinyl-leukotriene CysLT1 receptor, preventing the binding of leukotrienes to the receptor and blocking their effect on bronchial smooth muscle. Pranlukast also has been shown to inhibit some of the effects of histamine on human lymphocytes, suggesting that it may have anti-inflammatory effects.
Pranlukast can be used in combination with a variety of antibiotics for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as bowel disease caused by Clostridium difficile. It has been shown to reduce the number of eosinophils in the blood stream and improve symptoms related to asthma, including cough and wheezing. This drug also blocks activation of p2y receptors on eosinophils, which leads to reduced amounts of eosinophil cation
