Nalidixic acid is an antibiotic used to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria in culture media. It is a matrix effect agent that has a minimal effect on the growth of Gram-negative species. Nalidixic acid also has antiinflammatory activity and is used as a natural compound. The drug can be detected using an analytical method involving polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. This antibiotic is not active against antibiotic-resistant strains, such as those with tetracycline resistance or those that have been exposed to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Nalidixic acid inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA of bacterial cells, preventing protein synthesis and cell division. The drug may cause bowel disease in patients who are already suffering from bowel disease due to its ability to decrease the production of prostaglandins in the intestines.
