Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that binds to the ryanodine receptor and inhibits the voltage-gated calcium channels in gram-positive bacteria. This binding prevents the influx of calcium ions into the bacterial cell, which disrupts membrane potential and inhibits protein synthesis. Ofloxacin has been shown to be effective against oral pathogens as well as eye disorders, such as conjunctivitis, by inhibiting the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Ofloxacin is also used to treat bacterial infections in humans, but is not active against strains with resistance mutations.
