Polymyxin B nonapeptide hydrochloride is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It is not active against acid-fast bacteria, mycobacteria, or fungi. Polymyxin B nonapeptide hydrochloride inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins by binding to ribosomes at the peptidyl transferase site on the 50S subunit. It also binds to viral envelope proteins and has antiviral activity. This drug's antibacterial activity is enhanced when used in combination with erythromycin or chloramphenicol.
