1-Amino-5-phenylpentan-3-ol is a drug that is used in the treatment of epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases. It is an antagonist for the amino acid glutamate, which may be involved in the development of seizures and neurodegeneration. The compound has two enantiomers, which are called S(+) and R(−). The S(+) form has been shown to be more potent than the R(−) form. 1-Amino-5-phenylpentan-3-ol binds to the glutamate receptor on neurons, blocking the binding of glutamate and inhibiting its excitatory effects. This drug also has a diastereomeric effect, with one stereoisomer having a right hand twist and the other left hand twist.
