In the presence of water, protonation occurs at the pyrene group to form the cation 1,4-di(1-pyrenyl)benzene. The photophysical properties of 1,4-di(1-pyrenyl)benzene are dependent on its environment. Diode measurements show that 1,4-di(1-pyrenyl)benzene has a low band gap energy of 0.038 eV and a high quantum efficiency of 0.8%. Hydroscopic properties are also observed in this molecule when it is sequestered in an alternant crystal structure with another molecule.
