Altenuene is a natural product that has been shown to be effective against human pathogens. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the production of ATP, which is necessary for bacterial growth. Altenuene also has antifungal properties and can inhibit the growth of zearalenone-producing fungi. The mechanism of action is not yet known but it may involve inhibition of DNA synthesis or protein synthesis. Altenuene has been shown to be safe at sublethal doses in animal studies, with no signs of toxicity or adverse effects observed. It has been found that probiotic bacteria can grow on altenuene and it can also be used as a sample preparation reagent for analytical methods such as LC-MS/MS and preparative HPLC.
